Cork is a city with a varied and vibrant artistic community, and a fascinating cultural heritage. The activity of Cork 's artists, musicians, writers, poets and players is evident on our streets, in our galleries and on our stages. Cork City Council is a leading player in the cultural life of the city, funding libraries, museum, theatres, art centres and a range of arts activities from opera to street arts. The Cork Midsummer Festival has grown to be a very popular annual cultural activity.
In the performing arts - music, drama, dance - you should check out the Cork Opera House in Emmet Place , the Everyman Palace in MacCurtain Street and the Granary Theatre on the Mardyke.
The main venues for the visual in the city include the Crawford Municipal Gallery of Art in Emmet Place; the Lewis Glucksman Gallery at UCC, as well as commercial galleries such as the Fenton Art Gallery in Wandesford Quay, the Form Gallery in Paul Street and the Lavit Gallery at no. 5 Fr Mathew Street.
The Triskel Arts Centre,Tobin Street, and Tigh Filí on MacCurtain Street are centres catering for a variety of art forms, while the National Sculpture Factory is a key national resource for the plastic arts, and the Munster Literature Centre is a resource for young and emerging writers.
The city's musical life is nourished by University College Cork, Department of Music and the CIT Cork School of Music both of them important national centres of learning and research.

The Central Library on Grand Parade holds the city's main library and information resources; the Boole Library in University College Cork is a major international research library; the city is also home to the headquarters of the County Council Library & Arts service and to the Cork Institute of Technology Library.
Important centres for learning about Cork's heritage include the Public Museum in Fitzgerald Park; Cork Archives Institute in new purpose-built accommodation on Great William O'Brien Street in Blackpool; and Cork Vision Centre in North Main Street.
Cork is known throughout Europe and around the world as a festival city. The best known annual festivals on the city's calendar include the International Choral Festival in May, the Midsummer Festival in June, the Beamish Folk Festival in September, and the Cork International Film Festival and the Guinness Jazz Festival both in October.
Cork was European Capital of Culture in 2005.
