Adult Book Clubs / Reading Groups

Life is too short to read bad books.  Why not join one of our library-based Book Clubs and enjoy informative book discussions with like-minded people?  Book Club members meet once a month to discuss books and writers, and have the opportunity to attend book launches, author visits and trips to places  of literary interest.

Irish Language speaking groups: An Ciorcal Comhrá and Club Chúpla Focal

All levels of Irish are catered for, and everyone is given a chance to contribute. As well as providing an opportunity for adults to converse in Irish in an informal manner, these groups often discuss topical subjects and subjects from library books in Irish. Occasionally, authors/poets are invited to read from their own works. Cassettes and book packs on learning Irish are also available from library stock. The cupán tae agus brioscaí are very popular too!

  • An Ciorcal Comhrá is an informal group for adults that meets for conversational Irish. in Douglas Library at 11.00 a.m. on the fourth Friday of each month. One of the guests volunteers to act as a "Bean/Fear an Tí" to encourage the flow of conversation/comhrá. While about 12 to 15 people attend regularly, new people frequently turn up. Conversations can be quite lively, with the occasional song thrown in!
  • Two Cúpla Focal clubs meet in Tory Top Library. As the ‘cúpla focal’ name implies, if you feel you can speak only a couple of words in Irish you will be welcome in either of these groups. One Cúpla Focal club meets at 11.00 a.m. on the second Friday of each month, and the other group meets between 6.30 and 7.30 p.m. on the last Tuesday night of each month. Ta fáilte roimh gach éinne.
