Bishopstown Toastmasters Success

Toastmaster, John Keating was the winner of the Area 23 final of the International Speech Contest for 2009. John is currently the President of the Bishopstown Toastmasters who meet in the Library every Saturday morning. The event was held in March.

Bishop Peter Brown,Bishop of Cork & Ross, 1710-1735 was a native of Dublin, a noted scholar and he created what was called a "Publick Library" in the grounds of St Finn Barre's Cathedral in the 1720's.

Painting for Pleasure

Paintings for Pleasure is this month's exhibition from the Maclise Society and the first of 2009 in Bishopstown Library Gallery. It was launched by the Lord Mayor, Brian Bermingham, seen here with members of the Society. A wide range of paintings are on display with something to appeal to all tastes.

Ballet Exhibit
Pictured at the launch are Cherry O'Keeffe, The Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Brian Bermingham and Monica Galvin both of Cork Ballet Company.  This is a unique exhibition celebrating the life and work of Dr Joan Denise Moriarty, featuring rare photographic works and personal artefacts of both the person and of the ballet company she left as a legacy to the arts and particularly to ballet and dance in Cork and in Ireland. Lovingly put together by fans and friends devoted to her memory it is well worth a visit. The memorabilia of a bygone age is fascinating to behold. On display for the month of June in Bishopstown Library Gallery.

Faces an Exhibition by John McCarthy

Artist John McCarthy, pictured here with one of his pieces of Art, at the launch in Bishopstown Library Gallery. This is John's first exhibition and it will will run until July 13 next and is well worth a visit.

Pat Gillen from Ardmanning Avenue gave a very successful talk on 11th November in Bishopstown Library. Pat served with the V1Commando and landed on Sword Beach on D-Day
