maria assumpta national schoolThis September over 57 primary schools in Cork city have been invited to take part in Cork City Libraries Start Reading initiative, The project will see every child starting school in September 2010 receive a Start Reading pack from their local library. All junior infant classes in the city are invited to visit their local library where they will be presented with a specially designed Start Reading bag, containing three books for them to keep, a membership card and guidelines for parents on reading with their children. The aim of the initiative is to encourage children to read and by doing so enhance their imagination, life experiences and literacy skills, and hopefully becoming lifelong members of the public library. The initiative was launched in Tory Top Library, Ballyphehane by the Lord Mayor Michael O’Connell and in the Northside of the city in Blackpool Library by the Deputy Lord Mayor, John Kelleher. Anne Marie McCarthy author of Fungie The Dingle Dolphin read to the children and entertained them with an illustration workshop.
