Revised and updated from Cork International Choral Festival 1954-2004: A Celebration, Ed. Ruth Fleischmann, Cork 2004, p. 567.

[1] Apart from Games, commissioned for the Seminar on Contemporary Music by the Festival director Dr Geoffrey Spratt, Aloys Fleischmann composed nine works for the Festival. In 1952 he wrote Four Fanfares for An Tóstal; in 1953 Tableau for An Tóstal; in 1956 the choral dance suite Na Trí Captaení Loinge [The Three Sea Captains]; in 1957 the choral dance suites Bata na bPlanndála [The Planting Stick] and Suite The Cake Dance; in 1963 Amhrán na gCúigí [Song of the Provinces] which was performed in 1972; in 1974 Poet in the Suburbs for the 21st Festival; in 1978 Festival Song, with text specially written by John Montague, for the 25th Festival; Clonmacnoise was premiered at the Festival of 1990, having been commissioned by the Choral Society, Choir and Orchestra of UCC in 1980 on Fleischmann’s retirement.

[2] Zoltán Kodály accepted a commission to write a work for the Choral Festival of 1962 but became ill and was unable to do so. Ode to Music arrived unexpectedly in Cork on 3 April 1963, just five weeks before the Festival was due to begin; the composer wrote that he was too busy with his 80th birthday concerts to travel to Cork. It proved impossible at such short notice for the Festival to raise the money for Kodály’s honorarium, which he graciously remitted. Strictly speaking, the work was therefore not a commission and was designated by the Festival director as a “Greeting to the Tenth Cork International Choral and Folk Dance Festival.” It was discussed and first performed at the Seminar on 17 May 1963 by the Joseph-Haydn Singkreis of Munich, conducted by Hellmut Seidler, and received its first public performance that evening in the City Hall. It does not feature on the Seminar programme, that having already been printed before the Festival director received the work. The correspondence with Kodály is among the Fleischmann Papers, Archives, University College Cork.
