Joan Denise Moriarty Ireland's First Lady of Dance ed Ruth Fleischmann
Two years ago Cork City Libraries published The Fleischmanns, a remarkable Cork family, to mark the centenary of the birth of Aloys Fleischmann Jnr.  We publish the Joan Denise Moriarty book as a companion to that earlier publication, conscious of the many parallels between these two artists, creators, and indomitable activists for an Ireland that would have music, dance and the arts at the heart of daily life.

Joan Denise Moriarty Collection
The Joan Denise Moriarty Collection was donated to Cork City Libraries in 2010; we are currently sorting and listing this invaluable collection of letters, programmes, photographs, choreography and scores, and will begin the digitization of the material in 2012 as a major contribution to the centenary year.  The material will then be permanently available to all through this website. The major exhibition on Ms. Moriarty’s life and work, currently on view in the City Library, brings her story to a new generation. The library will have host a number of exhibitions throughout the year.

The Music for the Ballet – A Celebration of the work of Joan Denise Moriarty

Grand Parade Library from 26 February to 9 March 2012

This exhibition on the work of Joan Denise Moriarty was created by the Fleischmann family during the Fleischmann centenary celebrations. It was presented in Cork’s Firkin Crane in April 2010, opened by Domy Reiter-Soffer, the Israeli choreographer associated with all three Moriarty ballet companies, and a life-long friend of hers. The exhibition highlights Joan Denise Moriarty’s engagement with contemporary Irish composers in commissioning new music for her ballets, and her collaboration with traditional Irish musicians and groups such as Séan Ó Riada, Èamon de Buitléar, Ceoltóirí Chualann, Ceoltóirí Laighean and The Chieftains.
