February Lattes
In February the earth is at its coldest, we are still in winter’s icy grip, but an awakening has already come into the world of reading. In each Library readers begin to look forward to the spring lists, the new books that break through like crocus blossoms in a light snowfall. We share the excitement of the Constant Reader as the new season begins with its sense of hope and adventure in the world of reading. February, first and foremost, is a time of Romance with its Valentine’s Day and its sense of eternal promise. This February we will have our thousand lattes, something to keep our Constant Readers warm, to reward those who fought the long winter war. Sipping lattes in the winter city, opening chapters in the cafes of love, will be part of the Constant Reader’s February task.
Cork Re-Joyce!
On Monday, 2nd February James Joyce’s 127th birthday will be celebrated with a marathon reading. Joyce readers like Senator David Norris, Professor Colbert Kearney, Helene Duquin of Alliance Française, Liz O’Donoghue, Máire Bradshaw and others, will read from the master himself. An utterly absorbing and intriguing session of voices, music and film – from Jim McKeon reading the Cork sequence in Portrait of the Artist to Brendan Ryan reading ‘Ivy Day in the Committee Room’ from Dubliners, to the full screening of Joseph Strick’s Ulysses, with Milo O’Shea as Leopold Bloom. Central Library, from 3.30pm.
