In September 2010, over 57 primary schools in Cork city were invited to take part in the Cork City Libraries Start Reading initiative. For every junior infant starting school in those city schools in September 2010, the relevant local library provided a Start Reading pack for them. When each junior infant class pupil visited their local library they received a specially designed Start Reading bag, containing three books for them to keep, a membership card, and guidelines for parents on reading with their children. The aim of the initiative was to encourage children to read — and by doing so to enhance their imagination, life experiences, and literacy skills, with the aim of encouraging them to become lifelong members of the public library. The initiative was launched in Tory Top Library, Ballyphehane, by Lord Mayor Michael O’Connell, and in the Northside of the city in Blackpool Library by Deputy Lord Mayor John Kelleher. Anne Marie McCarthy, author of Fungie the Dingle Dolphin, read to the children and entertained them with an illustration workshop after the official launches.
