Library annual issues up by a quarter, to 1 million items

Boy carrying booksA total of 1,012,084 items — books, CD, DVDs — were borrowed from Cork City Libraries during 2011, a 26.5% increase over the 800,259 total for 2010.  The increase in borrowing reflects Cork City Council’s more affordable registration charges introduce at the beginning of 2011, as well as to the increased total number of items that can be borrowed by members at one time, and to the continued attention to best practice when selecting items for library stock.  The total no. of registered borrowers has also increased over the last few years to the present total of almost 24,000.  This figure does not include an estimated yearly total of 20,000 people who visit the library seeking information, attending music recitals, book clubs, book launches, poetry readings, events at the annual Cork World Book Festival, the Children’s book festival, Heritage Week, computer classes, Internet facilities, language skills, art appreciation, or simply browsing in-house through newspapers, journals, or books.  The above figures do not include the number of online visits to the Library’s general website at www.corkcitylibraries.ie and to its very popular local studies website at www.corkpastandpresent.ie .
