Tom McSweeney’s ‘Seascapes’ is one of the best loved programmes on RTÉ Radio 1, and he drew a large crowd of fans to the Central Library, when he read from the book of the same name on 7 July 2009. Tom became a sailor in his twenties, and he has been more at home on the seas than on land ever since. His love for the sea, and his concern, sometimes verging on despair, about the neglect of our maritime heritage and of the possibilities for development and leisure on offer to ‘this island nation’, came through very strongly. The lively discussion afterwards showed that his concerns are shared by many.
