The Morning Gift by Eva Ibbotson Morning Gift

Ibbotson uses her skill as a wonderfull storyteller to draw the reader into this tale of love and survival. Though engaged to her cousin Ruth marries a family friend to escape the Nazis and flee to London. Reunited with her family, but still seperated from the cousin she believes it is her destiny to marry, she begins a journey of self-discovery as she rebuilds her life. The strength of Ibbotson's characters and her gift with language make this book a must read for all.

Firebird by Susan Gates Firebird

Firebird has lived in an isolated swamp for 13 years, with only her father, her grandmother and her brother for company. Like all 13 year olds she begins to question the boundaries of her world. This beautifully written book invites the reader to join Firebird in an amazing journey as she moves from being passive to actively shaping the future direction of her life. Highly recommended.
Once by Morris GleitzmanOnceGleitzman

Felix lives in Poland in 1942. He has been in an orphange for 3 years though he believes his parents are still alive and will come back for him. But when Nazis come to the orphanage and burn books Felix fears his parents may be in danger so this brave 10 year old sets out on a journey to warn them. At times funny and heartbreaking throughout we hear about the Hollocaust in a fresh way, through the eyes of a child who refuses to let go of hope. This is not just a story for those who are interested in the Hollocaust, it is an inspirational story of struggle and survival, of daring to take chances, of believing that "Everybody deserves to have something good in their life. At least Once".
